To be honest, I think it’s best just to jump right in to something more challenging. As I mentioned, my very first trip was Italy; I was 17 and just moved there for the summer, alone (without knowing the language). BUT—I wouldn’t suggest that to anyone that wouldn’t be comfortable with it. If you are nervous, try it out in an Anglophone country first. You could also try Quebec, because you’ll hear lots of French, feel like you’re in Europe, but still be cushioned by the common English :]
